At Bango Media we are all about creating strategic and innovative publicity opportunities for our clients but as the saying goes, timing is everything when its comes to pitching an idea. Lead times are an important guideline for all PR agencies to take note of and follow. It does not matter how creative and ingenious your pitch is, if it is being pitched without consideration for media lead times, it most likely wont make it to the pages of your desired publication.
Lead times for media will vary from publication to publication but can be generally categorised into either long or short. Long lead media include large monthly magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Elle and as the name suggests, these glossy publications are being prepared 3-4, sometimes even 6 months in advance. Editors are already thinking about and trying to predict next season’s trends and hot items before the current months edition has even hit stands. Because of this it is important to be prepared for a long wait time from pitch to media reveal.
Short lead media includes newspapers, radio, TV, online and blogs with lead times ranging from immediate to 6-8 weeks. It is important to remember that journalists and editors/producers are working with tight deadlines.
